Self-Introduction/ Past experiences :

Hi! My name is Ananda Gabo (https://www.instagram.com/a__gabo/) and I am an industrial, artist and contract researcher based in Toronto, Canada. Over the last 10 years, I've been using craft and unusual materials to explore low-cost fabrication methods in the realm of D-I-Y biology (in varying levels of complexity) as well as being a forager-in-training and cook. There aren't any groups for biology here (although I am trying to organize one here now that I have the skills and resources) but I've spent the last 10 years learning and traveling where I can to learn about various skills in DIY biology and hacker culture.

In my spare time (and own funds as there is no support for this kind of programming) I also am running Paocai Bio. A workshop series that looks at community based biology through an east Asian diasporic (heritage) lens. Most of the workshop attendees are either east Asian science professionals (who want to do more art) or artists who don't have any experience with biology. So far I have just managed to focus on food + fermentation, traditional Chinese medicine and agar art, but I would love to eventually have my participants work more on DIY science hardware or editing their own organisms.

Website/ Portfolio

I don't have a portfolio or website up right now because I am still trying to document and assemble my recent work. But here is a link to some craft projects/ some illustration projects I've worked on in the past. It might be really dated though and doesn't include everything I've done:

Kombucha cultures for low-fidelity prototyping:

So I know that so many people have been using kombucha as a crafting material. But I love it as its extremely accessible and resilient. I've been exploring how to grow it into convenient vessels instead of growing it in square mats. I would love one day to grow larger and more experimental pieces as well as experimenting with soft robotics, I've experimented in 2018 growing actuators and sensors into Kombucha biofilm but it was really messy and poorly documented. It would be great to explore the concept of growing "flat packed" grow able shapes, patterns, and soft-enclosures.

Step 1: Create paper prototypes of flat surfaces that you would like to grow. Bacterial cellulose will form where the surface touches oxygen. So if you have a heart shaped vessel, you'll have a heart shaped culture!

Step 2: 3d print, laser cut, or fabricate vessles into the objects and seal any cracks with neutral silicone. Some silicone caulking has anti molding in it and although I haven't tested it with my tanks, I just use aquarium grade silicone just in case.

Step 3: Add a cover and let it grow! Some things I haven't figured out yet are how to securely embed actuators into it. Or have come up with a standard way of measuring shrinkage of the kombucha cultures. But I think kombucha is a great low-fidelity prototyping material due to its high pH and its availability. Here is an example of what it can look like: IMG 20200320 145446

On top of this, I usually like to send out samples of sequencing to know what strains of organisms exist within my culture. Its completely unnecessary, but I love the idea of genetic documentation in crafts.
