Tribal Against Machine is an evolving research project that aims to create a complex future art industry and new disciplines between the fields of art, science, cultural preservation, and architecture in a speculative manner. Tribal Against Machine was founded in 2017 as an annual international 10-day co-feeding and co-housing workshop at the Atayal Lihang Workshop in Taian County, Taiwan, creating the first trans-disciplinary collaboration between e-textile art and ethnic cultural heritage community in Taiwan. This cross-disciplinary exchange, using textile art and textile technology as a “common ground,” has to some extent resolved the technical and linguistic barriers to communication between the communities, and has created an exciting and promising new field and discipline in the short term. From a broader perspective, communication is not only technical, but also requires attention to the direction of contemporary art’s marginal expansion and its motivational decisions, the interaction between contemporary and traditional communities, and the interface between international communities and local cultures, which are expected to provide ecological perspective in the formation of the emerging art industries. In addition, the international movement and migration of communities and artists cannot be overlooked in the discussion of how these collaborative opportunities are generated, and the way in which networks are formed and shaped is often the mechanism behind emerging artistic activity, and is overwhelmingly based on friendships, often stemming from a shared interest in the discipline through passionate sharing at international art festivals. Therefore, one of the major tasks of Tribal Against Machine is to dynamically design interfaces with other international art fields in response to Taiwan’s geopolitics and geo-culture. These interfaces include international workshops, online seminars, and a collection of grant resources on topics such as technology and art, textile culture, and community building.
